Tips and Gratuity for Farm-Out Chauffeurs, Done Properly
How chauffeur gratuity works on farm-out jobs through LimoFarmOut: who adds the tip, how it reaches the driver, and how operators can pass on a client's tip.

Tips have always been the awkward part of farm-out work. The passenger thinks the gratuity was included in the price. The operator who sold the trip may have charged a service fee and kept it. The chauffeur who actually drove has no idea either way, and asking would break every rule of a professional service.
On LimoFarmOut a tip has a clear path from the person who wants to give it to the person who earned it. This guide explains how that path works, how operators can handle gratuity in their own client pricing, and what chauffeurs should and shouldn't do.
How a tip is added
After the trip, the poster can confirm it, rate the driver and add a tip. That is the moment the job is fresh, the trip went well, and the operator knows whether their client was happy.
The tip is paid through the platform and arrives with the driver's payout. It doesn't depend on anyone remembering to send a transfer later, and it doesn't depend on the passenger carrying cash.
The driver keeps it
Drivers pay no fee on jobs on LimoFarmOut, and that includes what reaches them as a tip. The tip is added to the payout and sent to the driver's bank through Stripe with the rest of the money for that job. If the driver uses instant cash-out, the only cost is the flat $2 for that cash-out.
Because the tip travels with the payout, it also appears on the driver's monthly statement, linked to the job. See statements for your accountant.
Why tips go through the poster
In a farm-out, the passenger is the poster's client, not the driver's. The terms say this directly, and every driver promises on each job not to contact the client or passenger directly, now or later. Calls and texts run through a private trip number, and contact details typed into the chat are removed.
That rule protects the operator's business, and it shapes how gratuity works. The natural route for a tip is:
- The client tells the operator they were pleased, or pays a gratuity as part of their booking.
- The operator adds a tip to the job after the trip.
- The tip reaches the chauffeur with the payout.
It keeps the client relationship where it belongs and still gets the money to the person who did the work.

For operators: handling gratuity in your pricing
How you charge your client for gratuity is your business decision. Some operators include it in an all-in price, some add a percentage, some leave it to the client. Whatever you choose, a few principles keep things fair:
- Be clear with your client. If your quote says gratuity is included, the client won't tip again. That's fine, but then decide whether part of it goes to the chauffeur.
- Pass on what was meant for the driver. If a client pays a gratuity for the chauffeur, add it as a tip on the job. It's quick and it's on the record.
- Use tips to reward great service. A tip after a difficult airport pickup or a long wedding day is noticed. Combined with a good rating, it helps you build a bench of chauffeurs who want your work.
- Don't use tips to fix the price. If a job needs a higher payout, set it before the trip, or accept a counter-offer. Waiting time, overtime, parking, tolls and extra stops have their own place in the extras the driver adds when closing the trip.

For chauffeurs: tips without the awkwardness
Professional chauffeurs know the passenger shouldn't feel pressured. On farm-out work, that matters even more, because the passenger belongs to the operator who sent you.
- Don't ask the passenger for a tip. If they want to show thanks, the operator can add it through the platform.
- Don't take payment for a platform job outside the platform. The terms require all payment for platform jobs to go through it.
- Let the service speak. Arrive early, keep the car spotless, use the private line for calls and texts, and keep each trip step up to date. Operators see your rating and comments, and good ratings bring more work.
- Record your extras. A tip isn't a replacement for waiting time or tolls. Add those when you close the trip so you're paid for them separately.
Your rating, the reasons posters give and recent comments are under Earnings → My rating. Over time, the operators who tip are also the ones whose jobs you'll want to accept first.
Tips and your taxes
A tip is money you earned, and it lands in the same payout as the trip. How tips are treated for tax depends on where you live and how your business is set up, so ask your accountant. In the US, the IRS Self-Employed Individuals Tax Center is a useful starting point for independent drivers.

Frequently asked questions
How do chauffeurs receive tips on LimoFarmOut?
The poster adds a tip after the trip, when confirming and rating it. The tip is paid through the platform and arrives with the driver's payout.
Does the driver pay a fee on tips?
No. Drivers pay no fee on jobs, so the tip reaches them with the payout. The only optional cost is the flat $2 for instant cash-out.
Can the passenger tip the chauffeur directly?
The passenger is the operator's client. If they want to tip, the best route is to tell the operator, who can add the tip to the job. Payment for platform jobs must go through the platform.
Is a tip the same as payment for waiting time?
No. Waiting time, overtime, parking, tolls and extra stops are extras the driver adds when closing the trip, and the poster approves them. A tip is an optional extra on top.
Will tips appear on my statement?
Tips arrive with your payout for that job, so they're part of the amounts on your monthly statement.
