Private Trip Numbers: Masked Calls and Texts for Chauffeurs
How masked phone numbers for chauffeurs work on LimoFarmOut: call or text the passenger through a private trip line, with neither side seeing a real number.

Every pickup has a moment where the chauffeur needs to reach the passenger. The flight landed early. The hotel has two entrances. The client is waiting at the wrong door of the terminal. A quick call fixes it.
On a farm-out job, that call raises a problem. Whose number does the driver use? If the passenger sees the driver's personal mobile, the operator who posted the job has just watched their client's contact list grow by one. If the driver sees the client's personal number, the same worry runs the other way.
LimoFarmOut solves it with masked phone numbers for chauffeurs. Each trip gets its own private line. The driver and the passenger can call and text each other freely, and neither sees the other's real number. Here is how it works in practice.
What the private trip number is
Think of it as a temporary switchboard that exists for one job only. When a driver accepts a trip, the platform connects the driver's registered mobile and the passenger's phone through a private number. Calls and messages pass through it. Real numbers stay hidden on both ends.
The relay covers phone calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages. It is carried by Twilio, a communications provider whose masked phone number service is built for exactly this kind of marketplace.
When the line opens and closes
The line works from the moment the driver accepts the job until 30 minutes after the trip is completed. That window covers everything a real trip needs:
- Confirming the pickup point the evening before or on the morning of the trip.
- Finding each other at a busy airport or hotel.
- A short "I left my scarf in the back" message right after drop-off.
Once the 30 minutes pass, the number stops connecting. There is nothing left for either side to call back, which is part of what keeps the poster's client theirs. We explain the wider rule in The No-Poaching Promise.

How a driver uses it on the day
Everything sits on the Trip screen under My account → Trip.
- Tap Call passenger or Text passenger. The call or message goes out through the private number.
- The passenger sees the trip's number, not yours. When they reply or call back, it reaches your registered mobile.
- Close the trip as normal when the ride is done. The line stays open for half an hour, then closes.
The passenger's first contact usually comes from a text in the posting company's name. It carries the chauffeur's first name, the vehicle, a live tracking link and the private number to reach the chauffeur.
Working from a computer or an office phone system. Some drivers and dispatchers sit at a desk or use an office line. The relay only connects the mobile registered on the account, or the named chauffeur's mobile on a fleet job. Calls from another phone, from WhatsApp calling or from an office system are refused for privacy.
The fix is the Call from my mobile button. The platform rings your registered mobile first, then connects the passenger once you answer. You talk from your phone, the passenger still sees only the trip number.
Fleet jobs. When a company accepts a job and names the chauffeur, the chauffeur's mobile is the one allowed to use the private line. The person who accepted the job in the office does not need to relay messages by hand.
What is kept and what is not
Privacy is not only about hiding digits. It is also about what happens to the conversation afterwards. According to the privacy policy:
- Calls are connected live and never recorded.
- Texts and WhatsApp messages sent through the relay are saved in the job's chat, so both sides can see what was said.
- The platform keeps a record of when the relay was used.
- That chat text is removed from the job 180 days after it closes, along with passenger names, phone numbers and flight numbers. More on that in How Passenger Data Is Kept and Erased.
Saving texts in the chat helps everyone. If the passenger wrote "please wait at door 4", that instruction is on the record if anyone asks later.
Why masked calls help the driver, not just the operator
It is tempting to see the private number as a rule that protects operators. It does, but chauffeurs gain a lot from it too.
- Your personal number stays personal. Passengers can't call you at midnight a month later or add you to a group.
- No awkward requests. When a passenger asks for your number "for next time", you have an honest answer: everything goes through the trip line.
- A clean record. If there is ever a question about whether you called or texted, the relay log and the saved messages show it.
- More trust, more work. Operators who know their client's details are protected are more willing to post their best trips. That means more prepaid jobs on the job board.
Common problems and quick fixes
The call drops right away. You are probably calling from a phone that is not registered on your account. Use your registered mobile, or tap Call from my mobile.
The passenger didn't get my text. Check that you used Text passenger on the Trip screen, not your own messaging app.
The trip is over but the passenger needs me. You have 30 minutes after completion. If a passenger left something behind, there is a separate step that keeps the line open longer, described in What Happens When an Item Is Left in the Limo.
If something else fails, every error message in the app has a Report a problem link that sends the team exactly what you saw. The help page also lists the most common fixes.
Privacy rules behind the design
Masked calling is a practical way to collect and share only the personal data a job needs. That idea, often called data minimisation, runs through privacy laws such as Canada's PIPEDA and the European Union's data protection rules. A driver does not need a client's personal number to collect them from Terminal 3, so the system never hands it over.

Frequently asked questions
Can the passenger see my real phone number?
No. Calls and texts go through the trip's private number, so neither the driver nor the passenger sees the other's real number.
How long does the private trip line work?
From the moment you accept the job until 30 minutes after the trip is completed.
Are calls through the private number recorded?
No. Calls are connected live and never recorded. Texts and WhatsApp messages sent through the relay are saved in the job's chat.
Can I call the passenger from my office phone?
Not directly. The line only connects your registered mobile. Use Call from my mobile: the platform rings your mobile first and then connects the passenger.
Does the relay work with WhatsApp?
Yes. The relay carries phone calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages between the driver and the passenger.
